Understanding AI Tokens and Costs with Projectal

Modified on Wed, 19 Aug at 11:00 AM

No Cost from Projectal

Connecting your AI tools (such as Claude, ChatGPT, or custom agents) to Projectal’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server carries no additional charges or fees from Projectal.

The MCP server acts as a direct, seamless bridge, allowing your AI assistant to read project data, track resource allocations, and execute updates without incurring any licensing or usage costs on your Projectal account.

How Token Consumption Works

When an AI agent interacts with Projectal, it processes data through unit measurements called tokens (roughly equivalent to pieces of words). Every request sent to your AI tool involves two types of token usage:

  • Tool Discovery (System Context): To know what Projectal can do, your AI client loads Projectal’s available tool definitions (e.g. fetching project status, searching staff capacity) into its memory context.
  • Data Processing & Response: Tokens are consumed when the AI reads retrieved Projectal data or formats a response for you.

Where Costs Originate

All token consumption is billed directly by your chosen AI model provider (such as Anthropic for Claude or OpenAI for ChatGPT), according to your existing API plan or subscription tier. Because Projectal’s MCP server simply passes structured requests back and forth, any usage charges you see will come strictly from the compute fees of your AI platform, and never from Projectal.
